Happy Birthday Mom!

9 Feb

It is nice when Mom’s birthday falls on the weekend! We started off her birthday celebration with presents. I had tried to explain to Miss H that it is really best to not tell people what their gift is but let them unwrap it and be surprised. I continued to explain that we should also let the person who is having the birthday unwrap the gift. Miss H was good with both these theories for about 5 seconds before she blurted out that we got Grandmom a new purse and a cupcake charm for her bracelet and did all the unwrapping. Her enthusiasm was appreciated by everyone.

Then, we went for a yummy brunch at Columbia Firehouse and it did not disappoint. I think this is quickly becoming a family favorite. And, Eggs Benedict is one of my favorite meals and this one was piled with shrimp. So good!

It was super windy today but we still made our way down towards the Torpedo Factory. It was nice and toasty inside and we got to see some great art. I am on the hunt for new pictures for our dining room and I think I found some that we would all like! Plus, the artist was super, super nice and gave us lots of suggestions.

My other favorite location for birthdays is Alexandria Pastry Shop and the cake we got today was delicious. Also, on any birthday, Miss H has to help with the candles. By looking at the pictures you would think it was her birthday.

The fruit bavarian cake was huge hit (there is barely any left).

So, another great day and birthday! Happy birthday Mom!

Breakfast with Santa and Surprise Dinner Date

9 Dec

I remember going to ‘Breakfast with Santa’ when I was little (and so does Aunt Leigh) so we decided to find one this year to take Miss H. I had visions of kid mayhem but it ended up being quite pleasant. We picked the one at The Carlyle Club in Alexandria and they did a great job. Miss H loved the breakfast food and was super duper impressed with the elves that passed out gifts while they waited for Santa.

Miss H was surprised to see the man in the red suit.

We worked on her list of items as we ate breakfast. It was a random assortment of things.

We were not so sure if she would actually talk to him (or get near him) but she presented her list and hopped on his lap. Finally, our streak of no Santa photos has been broken!

They were both very excited to discuss the items on the list. He nicely asked, ‘so, you want a stuffed animal that is a cat?’ She looked at him like he was a big dummy and said very seriously, ‘No, a real cat.’

We were even more surprised when she gave him a hug.

He even had a new toy for her in his bag.

It was a very fun and yummy Breakfast with Santa!

We spent the remainder the afternoon doing yard work (well, Kerry did and Miss H and I colored the sidewalk). Then to my surprise, Kerry had planned a date night for us at the Columbia Firehouse. It was delicious!

We started off with 4 different types of oysters and salad. Kerry picked the New York strip streak and I had bison stroganoff. All of our choices were excellent! And it was a nice way to spend a Saturday evening.

Hope everyone is having a happy weekend!
