With a ranking of 414

9 May

The Social Security Administration came out with the list of most popular baby names for 2008 this week. Hadley is ranked #414- a big jump from being #900 in 2000. According to Nymbler.com– Hadley is at an all time popularity but with a ranking of 414, I don’t think she will have a bunch of girls in her kindergarten class with the same name. I realized this week that we never really posted how or why we picked the name. The story is not all the original- I picked up a baby name book when I was about 18 weeks pregnant because we had not been able to agree on any names. The only thing we could agree on is that we did not want something really popular. (Funny thing is that neither of us have ‘it’ names and have no idea what it is like to have a name in the top 25). So, when we were watching TV, I would pick up the book and start saying names out loud and Kerry would usually respond with ‘no.’ Most of the time- I would say the outrageous names from the book and then occasionally would put in a name I actually liked. The tactic was to give a string of ‘no-way’ names and then the names that I did like would be more appealing. I started with the beginning of the alphabet and would usually only get 10-15 names at a time before we would both be tired of the game. One day I was calling out names from the ‘H’ section and both of us at the same time liked Hadley. According to the book- the names meaning was ‘fields of heather’ and was of English decent.

Of course, I continued the name game for several weeks and the list changed around but Hadley was still always there. Finally, when we were in the hospital for our ‘trial run,’ we had that moment of panic that we really needed to decide on a name. That evening- we picked Hadley Ellen. Ellen was Kerry’s grandmother’s name and we liked how it sounded together but we did want to wait until she was born to make sure it was right. Now, hoping that it does not break into the Top 100 anytime soon.

Hadley turns 7 weeks tomorrow and will be spending Mother’s Day with her mom, dad, grandmom and aunt.
