all three of us

Lots of fresh air!

Before I start posting about our weekend, here are the birthday pictures I promised.

Kerry and Miss H with his presents. She so badly wanted to unwrap the first present but she decided that Daddy should be allowed to open the first one.

For some reason, he thought I was getting him a book. The iPad was a total surprise. By his expression, I think he was surprised.

Miss H was disappointed in only having three boxes to unwrap.

But, then it was on to singing, candles and cake.

She was a huge help in with the candles.

She made certain that we all knew that Daddy had missed a candle.

We were supposed to go to the beach this weekend but on Thursday, I started having weird foot pain. By Friday morning, it seemed it was not going to go away on its own so I had to go to the doctor. After some x-rays, it was determined that I either have a fracture (that is not showing up on the x-rays just yet) or a Morton’s Neuroma. So, I got treated with some steroid shots and have a follow-up next week to see if anything has changed. Whatever the foot problem turns into, it hurts and my walking is greatly impacted. So, we postponed our beach trip.

We did not want the weekend to totally be about icing and elevating my foot so we started off our Saturday with soccer. Miss H’s coach decided to play t-ball for the first part of class and all the kids had so much fun. And, Miss H made contact with almost every ball and they were going far. She was so proud of herself!

Then, it was time at the park with friends, a trip to the mall for a haircut, more playground, lunch, Dairy Queen, and then home.

We decided on a Japanese Steak House and Miss H loved that they cooked right at the table. The fire, the egg tossing, the onion volcano and all the food were a huge hit. Kerry and I just laughed at her reaction to it all. She even tried to catch the shrimp that was being tossed to everyone. No pictures, but trust me it was fun.

Today, it was more time outside. Our awesome neighborhood farmer’s market opened and we loved seeing our favorite vendors. Somehow, Miss H remembered the ‘apple guy’ and was intently looking for a scone. She found both and she ate her way through the farmer’s market. We met up with some friends and did another loop through so we could get pinwheels and flowers for everyone. Then, Miss H led the way to the playground. Everyone was sad when it was time to go but we needed to go meet Aunt Leigh and Mom to pick strawberries.

Leigh discovered Shlagel Farms and we all had a great time. The strawberries were delicious and it was fun to find them on the vines. Miss H was busy finding only the ‘really red ones.’

We all picked a fair amount of berries to take home and share with friends.

The farm had chickens, a bunch of other fresh vegetables, hanging baskets (I got an early Mother’s Day gift), a playground and a big sand pile that Miss H was loving.

We even managed to get some fun pictures.

After all this fresh air, we were all exhausted. Miss H was so exhausted, that after dinner, she literally toppled into sleep while sitting on the couch. I guess we succeeded in wearing her out today :-) Hope everyone had a great weekend.

More Birthday Fun!

Miss H was very excited about Kerry’s birthday and she had three concerns: the cake, how many candles and when we were going to sing. So, I had to get a delicious cake and decided to order one from Alexandria Pastry Shop. The strawberry shortcake was loved by everyone.

I will post pictures later of Kerry and Miss H blowing out the candles.

And, Kerry was totally surprised by his new iPad and the necessary iPad accessories!

Lordy, Lordy, Look Who’s 40!

Kerry turns the big 4-0 today :-)

We laughed over dinner on Saturday about us barely being in our 30s when we met. Now, all these years later, he has completed a decade. And, for the first time we are in different decades!

Today is extra special because Kerry shares a birthday with his Dad.

So, what was happening 40 years ago…..

May 1st was a Monday. His dad turned 29.

Tim McGraw was born May 1st, just a few years earlier.

Kerry shares a birthday with Benjamin Latrobe (he designed the US Capitol and was born many years before 1972).

J. Edgar Hoover died on the 2nd.

The Rangers won the Cup Winner’s Cup.

The space shuttle program started.

HBO had its first subscription service.

The digital watch hit the markets.

Atari’s PONG was the height of technology.

And, the Volkswagen Beetle became the most popular car ever.

Do you feel old yet?

Cheers to the next 40 years!
:-)

A Visit to Oxon Hill Farm

Who knew a great little farm was so close to our house! Oxon Cove Park and Oxon Hill Farmare part of the National Park Service and they are a short trip across the Woodrow Wilson Bridge from us. Miss H got to see cows, pigs, chickens, one mean turkey, goats, horses and made friends with the farm cat.

The weather was perfect today so we knew we wanted to be outside and this was a perfect little trip. Best of all, it is totally free :-)

Miss H first noticed the cows and tried to convince them to come over to the fence. “Here Mr. Cow, cow, cow…,” did not seem to be that intriguing to the cows so they continue to be lazy in the pasture.

Next, we found the chickens and the big, ugly, mean turkey. He must have been having an especially bad day because he kept puffing his feather at everyone. I am sure Miss H laughing at this display did not help his mood.

She quickly became distracted by the three pigs close by. Also, we stumbled onto a ranger program for the kids. She was gathering up all the fresh eggs from the chickens and then they became the treat for the pigs. Miss H loved seeing a pig eat a whole egg.

I think her favorite farm animal was the cat. I even heard Kerry promise her a cat when we move. Hmmmm…..

Her calling to the donkey actually worked and he came over to greet us by the fence.

After all that hard work, it was time to relax on the porch.

The farm was definitely a fun little way to spend the morning! I am sure we will be heading back there again.

After all this running around, we headed to lunch with Mom. We spent the rest of the afternoon running errands and getting ready for the week. It must have been an exhausting day for Miss H because she was asleep by 6pm! Hope everyone had a great weekend.

The rain did not damper our plans!

Since Kerry is turning 40 in a few days, I decided to make plans for a little pre-birthday celebration. I would have loved to get out of town for a few days but with his back still in recovery, staying local is best.

I wanted to do something touristy that we had not done before so I got tickets for the ‘Washington by Water’ tour that leaves from the Alexandria dock. It was definitely overcast and a little chilly but no rain for our ride.

We enjoyed some casual shipping in Georgetown (neither of us can remember when we were in a store together without Miss H). We must have been feeling guilty because we found Miss H a cute t-shirt from Patagonia. And, still no rain.

I debated about dinner reservations and finally decided on Morton’s of Georgetown. Kerry loves a good steak (but is not big on swanky restaurants that require jackets) and dinner was great. We had delicious oysters, great salads, he had steak, I had sea bass, we shared sour cream mashed potatoes and they nicely boxed up New York-style cheesecake for us to take home. Plus, they personalized out menu and were generally really nice!

It rained most of the time we were inside but ended by the time we were leaving. I was hoping we would have nice weather but the rain did not put a damper on our plans!

More celebrating to come this week!
