Easter Eve

After our busy morning of soccer, it was off to run some errands and then home to dye eggs. This was a very serious art project.

Grandmom helped with color selection and decorating.

Miss H was very creative with the stickers on her eggs too. The eggs designated for Kerry were orange and had football, baseball and basketball stickers. While, Miss H put soccer balls stickers on her purple eggs. Me and Grandmom got the rest of the colors and had flowers and rocket ships :-)

The Hirshhorn Museum has a new installation art piece that makes the outside of the circular museum the perfect movie screen. Since the weather was so nice, we decided to head down to the Mall to see the ‘movie’ and burn off more energy from Miss H. The exhibit starts at dark so we had some time to explore the sculputure garden. Mom taught Miss H to throw coins over her shoulder and make a wish. I thought this was skill was primarily for the Trevi Fountain but I guess it works for any fountain. Miss H loves her new over the shoulder coin tossing skill.

Also, she liked all the scupltures that were ‘houses.’

(If you look closely, you can see me taking the picture and Miss H running in the reflection)

Or, ones that had toes. After this picture, we noticed the sign about no touching the art so we ceased touching the art- even though, someone desperately wanted to touch all the art.

After a ride on the Mall carousel (no pictures), it was time for the movie to start.

We all thought it was cool. So, definitely take a trip to see it!

The warm weather did not stick around

It was beautiful on Friday (think 70+ degrees) but then it returned to being a little chilly with some crazy winds on Saturday. My car got nailed by a realtor sign but luckily it hit the rubber part of my front bumper and my license plate.  I think I lost one of the wipers for my headlights (which are kind of silly anyway) in the sign incident.  Anyway, we had a fun time at a friend of Miss H’s birthday on Saturday despite the cold and wind.

The theme centered around lollipops so there was a craft table for decorating lollipops.

Plus, there was giant marshmellows dipped in chocolate and sprinkles. Miss H loved the blue sprinkles (and they tinted her lips and chin so nicely).

After all the sugar, crayons and stickers they could handle- it was downstairs to play with the kitchen, trains and guinea pigs.

Miss H was not sure if the guinea pigs were ‘puppies,’ ‘bunnies,’ or ‘meows,’ but they sure loved the strawberries she fed them.

Kerry added to the creative kitchen play by making bacon.

We did sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to the birthday girl and I tried to convince Miss H about the merits of chocolate cupcakes but she was only interested in the strawberries. I guess one of us was healthy!

As promised before, here is our completed guest bath. Kerry did an awesome job! It looks so good. Now, time to do the master bath :-)

Super Bowl Edition

Someone got new sunglasses this week and they are essential accessories inside the house. She is usually not big on the accessories- no headbands, barrettes, gloves, mittens, hats- but we did rock the headband in true 80s fashion this week.

Plus, oven mitts are always in style. (Be sure to notice that are living room is completely trashed by the end of the day).

Mom came up on Saturday and brought an early Valentine’s present from Leigh to Miss H. At first, she just wanted to play with the ribbon.

Once we got the paper off she was excited about the twelve new cars for her ramp. She has played with them all weekend!

Aunt Marilyn and Linda came to visit too but we did not get any pictures :-( Miss H got upset when we tried to get a group photo. But, she had a lot of fun with them and we hope they come to visit again soon.

Kerry and I have been talking about finishing our guest bathroom for almost two years. Seriously. We re-tiled the bathroom a few weeks after Miss H was born but never replaced the cabinet, counter top, faucet, medicine cabinet, and repainted. So, we decided today was a good day to start to finish. Of course, simple projects are never simple and now we have to add wall repair to the list of things to do. However, everything should be done by next weekend. Here is a preview:

And, since it is the Super Bowl today- I made hot wings in the oven and they were very good. Miss H even ate a few!

Thanksgiving Cooking and Christmas Craftiness

We might have a future chef on our hands. Miss H was so fascinated with me making pumpkin pies that I had to let her sit on the kitchen counter. She made sure the sugar, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg tasted just right (‘yum!”) and helped stir everything together. When we had to put the pies in the oven it was very, very sad and there was a protest. I tried to explain that they needed to be cooked but that seem to not be on her agenda.  Maybe I will try having her make sugar cookies in a few weeks?

I had a pretty easy cooking assignment for Thanksgiving- I am responsible for the pumpkin pies, Paula Dean’s Mac and Cheese, Stove Top (yes, the just add water stuffing for Kerry and Leigh), Cool Whip and cranberry butter. All put together tonight and ready to go for tomorrow.

Last year, I had intended on making a Christmas Ornament Wreath that I had found on this site but never, ever got around to it. So, tonight I made two. Mom- if you are reading this- one is for you.

They were super simple and here are my easy directions:

1. Big assortment of shatter proof ornaments.

2. Use a hot glue gun to securely attach the top to the ornament. This is time consuming but will make your life easier.

3. Get a wire coat hanger, bend into a circle and start loading on the ornaments. I used various sizes to make the ornaments fit better.

4. Each wreath will take about 60+ ornaments depending on size.

5. Fill the entire hanger and then re-close the hook.

6. Find a ribbon to cover the hook and then hang on your door!

Hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Everyone is getting better

It has been two weeks since Kerry’s back surgery and he had a a slight set back last week due to a nasty infection. After I pestered him about calling the doctor because of swelling and lovely green-ness of his incision, he did go to the doctor just in time to avoid being re-opened up. He then had to go back on Friday to see if it had impoved (there was still the threat of another surgery to clean out the uckiness) and luckily all was better. It still looks kind of gross so I won’t post a picture but all is improving.

Mom had surgery last week too and since I was taking care of Kerry- we were unable to see her on surgery day but Leigh and Mom’s friends did a great job.  Miss H and I went to Annapolis today to check on her and we were impressed with her recovery. She even felt well enough to go out to a late breakfast. Miss H had a lot of fun at her house playing with the set of stacking blocks, the drink coasters, the cat toys, the remote control, the telephone and the cool blue straws. All that excitement did equal her falling asleep about two minutes into the car ride home. No one else is allowed to get sick or have surgery for the next month or so.

Since Kerry has not spent that much time out of the house since surgery- we did enjoy the beautiful Saturday and decided to visit a local (REAL!) pumpkin patch. So real that the pumpkins are actually on the vine :-)

(Kerry really should not be lifting that pumpkin above his head because that goes against all the ‘lifting rules’ the doctor talked about but he promised it was not more than 8 pounds).

Miss H would have taken home everything she could grab plus a few more but we settled on two good size carving pumpkins. We need to figure out what our designs are going to be and get carving at some point this week and I found out that Kerry has never roasted pumpkin seeds!  Yum! Obviously, the trip to the pumpkin patch was for all three kids in the family.

I usually am a city girl but I do appreciate a good dose of the country and with the beautiful weather- the pumpkin patch really was nice. It always amazed me that not that far from the crowded, busy streets of where we call home- is this.
